Stranded Dolphin at Praa Sands: A Rescue Attempt Amidst Rough Conditions
In a heartfelt response to a marine emergency, the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) was summoned to the shores of Praa Sands in Cornwall on Saturday, 17th February, following reports of a stranded dolphin. Amidst rough surf and adverse weather conditions, concerned members of the public had made initial attempts to refloat the marine mammal, risking their safety in the process.
Upon arrival, BDMLR Medics quickly took charge, rescuing the dolphin from the relentless waves washing it ashore. The creature was identified as a striped dolphin, a species seldom seen in UK waters, preferring the warmer climes of the Bay of Biscay. Unlike many of its kind that strand on British coasts—often in poor health and malnourished—this dolphin was found in moderate condition, sparking hope for its survival and potential refloatation.
A thorough examination revealed minor injuries from the stranding, alongside older wounds, and signs of significant stress. Consulting veterinarians assessed the dolphin’s condition and, considering its moderate health agreed that a refloat attempt was feasible. However, the perilous conditions at Praa Sands necessitated a relocation to the more sheltered Carbis Bay, which was deemed a safer environment for the dolphins’ recovery and release efforts.
A dedicated Medic accompanied the dolphin to Carbis Bay, where it was given time to recuperate. Initially, the dolphin swam erratically close to the shore but gradually ventured further out into the sea. Despite an exhaustive search by the rescue team, there were no subsequent sightings, leading to the stand-down of the Medics on site.
The narrative took a sombre turn the following morning when Medics, already scouring the area, were alerted to a dolphin struggling in the surf at Hayle. A team, along with a veterinarian, promptly responded, only to find the dolphin’s health had deteriorated, exhibiting erratic breathing and distressing behaviour indicative of more profound health issues. With the dolphin’s welfare as the priority, the difficult decision was made to euthanise it to prevent further suffering.
Following a humane and painless procedure, the dolphin was transferred to the Cornwall Marine Pathology Team for a post-mortem examination. This investigation aims to provide valuable insights into the dolphin’s life and the circumstances leading to its stranding and subsequent health decline.
The BDMLR, alongside the Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team, volunteers, the Cornwall Marine Pathology Team, and the supportive staff of the Carbis Bay Hotel, extended their gratitude to everyone involved in the rescue attempt. This incident underscores the challenges faced in marine mammal rescue and the collaborative effort required to address these emergencies compassionately and effectively.
