St Ives Community Orchard & Nature Reserve is calling on the public to participate in the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) Big Garden Birdwatch, the world’s largest citizen science wildlife survey.

Scheduled between January 26th and 28th, this annual event offers a unique opportunity for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers to contribute to a significant wildlife study.

Participants are encouraged to spend an hour observing and counting the birds in their local area. The process is simple: choose any hour within the designated dates, note down the species and number of birds seen, and then report the findings online to the RSPB. The organisers emphasise that all observations are valuable, even if no birds are spotted.

For those who are new to bird watching or need assistance in identifying different bird species, St Ives Community Orchard is hosting a special event on Sunday, January 28th, at 12 noon. The community orchard will provide an ideal setting for birdwatching, surrounded by nature.

At this event, participants will have the unique opportunity to learn from birdwatching experts, including Viv Stratton. These experts will be on hand to help identify various bird species and assist with the counting process. The collective results from this gathering will be submitted as part of the broader survey effort.

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch is a crucial initiative that helps track the health of the UK’s bird population. It’s an easy and enjoyable way for people of all ages to connect with nature and contribute to important scientific research. The participation of communities like St Ives plays a vital role in gathering data that helps conservationists understand more about bird populations and their trends.

St Ives Community Orchard & Nature Reserve’s involvement in the Big Garden Birdwatch highlights their commitment to wildlife conservation and community engagement. The event promises to be a delightful experience for everyone, offering a chance to engage with nature and contribute to a nationwide conservation effort.
