March for Hogs – A Step Towards Saving UK’s Hedgehogs

Published On: 21 February 2024Last Updated: 21 February 2024By

In an effort to combat the declining hedgehog populations in the UK, Prickles and Paws Hedgehog Rescue has announced a new initiative aimed at raising awareness and support for these vulnerable creatures. Dubbed “March for Hogs,” the campaign is a call to action for individuals to walk a mile every day throughout the month of March to help hedgehogs.

Hedgehogs are now classified as vulnerable to extinction in the UK, a concerning status that has prompted Prickles and Paws to take action. The rescue organisation, which experienced its busiest year on record in 2023 with 1,400 hedgehog admissions, is gearing up for what is anticipated to be an even busier spring season. Through the March for Hogs challenge, the organisation hopes to bring people together to make a tangible difference in the lives of these small, spiny mammals.

Participants in the March for Hogs challenge are encouraged to sign up and receive a limited edition t-shirt or jumper, along with a digital information pack. This pack includes a helpful hedgehog checklist, a sponsorship form, and information on setting up an online fundraiser for those who prefer digital fundraising efforts. Hedgehogs are known to roam up to a mile each night, making the challenge of walking a mile a day a symbolic gesture of solidarity with these nocturnal wanderers.

The initiative is not just about physical activity; it’s also an educational campaign designed to spread awareness about the plight of hedgehogs in the UK. Upon completion of the challenge, participants will receive a certificate, commemorating their involvement and support for hedgehog conservation.

The March for Hogs event represents a crucial step towards raising awareness and generating support for hedgehog conservation efforts in the UK. By walking a mile a day in March, participants will not only be contributing to a worthy cause but also joining a community of like-minded individuals committed to making a difference for the future of hedgehogs. To join the movement and for more information, interested individuals can visit the Prickles and Paws Hedgehog Rescue website.
