In a bid to spread awareness and knowledge about bumblebees, the Three Bays Wildlife Group is hosting a Bumblebee Identification Workshop for Beginners at The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
Scheduled for the 14th of April, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, this workshop promises an educational and engaging experience for anyone interested in learning more about these essential pollinators.
Booking Details
Prospective participants are encouraged to secure their spots by booking through The Lost Gardens of Heligan website. The workshop, designed specifically for beginners, aims to introduce the top eight bumblebee species found in the UK. It’s a unique opportunity to gain insight into the fascinating world of bumblebees and contribute to their conservation.
A Day of Learning and Exploration
The workshop is set to begin with a classroom session that will cover the basics of bumblebee identification. Attendees will learn not only how to distinguish between different species but also about the importance of bumblebees in our ecosystem. The session aims to inspire participants to join the Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s ‘BeeWalk’ monitoring scheme, a critical effort in gathering data on bumblebee populations.
Following the classroom session, participants will embark on a Bee Safari around the stunning Lost Gardens of Heligan. This hands-on experience will allow attendees to apply their newfound knowledge in a real-world setting, searching for the bumblebee species discussed earlier in the day.
Additional Information
The ticket price for the workshop includes a hot drink and a piece of the famous Heligan cake, with proceeds going to support the efforts of the Three Bays Wildlife group. Participants are advised to dress appropriately for the Cornish weather, with layers and waterproofs recommended, along with sturdy shoes for the safari.
For those wishing to extend their visit to the gardens beyond the workshop, separate garden entry can be purchased, or a local’s pass can be used. The workshop and Bee safari are planned to be accessible to all, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the beauty of Heligan and learn about the critical role of bumblebees in our environment.
This workshop offers a unique blend of education, conservation, and enjoyment, set against the backdrop of one of the UK’s most beautiful gardens. It represents a significant step towards engaging the public in wildlife conservation and the protection of our vital bumblebee populations.
