Why Are More Couples Ditching Big Weddings and Running Off to Cornwall?

The Vean at Caerhays offers elopement experiences as more couples choose smaller ceremonies in the county

More couples than ever are turning their backs on traditional big weddings and eloping to Cornwall instead. Caerhays Estate has responded to this growing trend by offering tailored elopement and intimate wedding experiences at The Vean – a restored Georgian country house tucked away in the scenic Porthluney Valley.

A Shift Towards Smaller Celebrations

According to Jen Polkinghorn, Wedding Co-ordinator at Caerhays Estate Weddings, couples are prioritising privacy and personalisation over grand-scale events.

“Couples are placing greater value on privacy and personalisation, moving away from traditional large-scale weddings,” said Jen. “We’ve noticed a clear shift toward more intimate ceremonies, so we now offer The Vean as the perfect elopement setting for those who want to break away from the norms and do things their way!”

This change is not limited to Cornwall. National figures show that searches for ‘Elopement Weddings’ have jumped by 83%, with an 85% increase in demand for ‘Elopement Wedding packages in the UK’—and Cornwall is proving to be one of the most popular destinations, with nearly one in five eloping couples choosing the county.

The Vean: A Unique Wedding Setting in Cornwall

The Vean offers a secluded and luxurious setting for weddings of 2 to 20 guests, complete with bespoke catering and accommodation.

Luke Tyler, Manager of The Vean, said, “Weddings at The Vean are all about connection – it’s about bringing together the people who matter most in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere. The intimacy of our venue allows us to craft personalised experiences that reflect each couple’s vision.”

Budget-Friendly Without Sacrificing the Magic

With the rising cost of living influencing how couples plan their big day, elopements are also seen as a more budget-conscious alternative.

Lucinda Rimmington, Marketing Manager at Caerhays, explained: “Elopement can represent a more affordable wedding option, allowing couples to streamline their priorities and focus their budget on the areas that are most important to them. The Vean perfectly meets the rising demand for small and immersive wedding experiences, where everyone can connect and celebrate together in this truly spectacular location.”
