Storm Darragh Set to Batter Cornwall’s Coast: RNLI Issues Urgent Safety Warning
Storm Brings High Winds and Hazardous Conditions
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is urging residents and visitors in Cornwall to prioritise safety as Storm Darragh sweeps across the UK and Ireland this weekend. Amber and yellow weather warnings for wind and rain have been issued from Friday evening, with gusts of up to 70-80mph expected to lash the region’s western coastline.
The Met Office has placed yellow weather warnings in effect until early Sunday morning, cautioning the public about dangerous conditions. The RNLI is particularly concerned about the risks posed to those near the coast and is urging everyone to stay well back from stormy seas and exposed areas.
Key Risks and Safety Advice
Tim Doran, National Water Safety Partner for the RNLI, highlighted the dangers: “We know the predicted weather this week could lead to dangerous and uncertain conditions.
“If you plan on visiting the coast, the RNLI advises that you stay a safe distance from the water as conditions could knock you off your feet or wash you into the sea. It is not worth risking your life.”
Tim also reminded people of the lifesaving “Float to Live” advice: “If you find yourself in trouble unexpectedly in the water, remember to Float to Live; lie back in the water, extend your arms and legs and try to relax as best as you can until you get control of your breathing.”
If you witness someone in danger, Tim stressed the importance of calling for professional help: “If you see someone else in danger in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. If you have something that floats that they can hold on to, throw it to them. Don’t go in the water yourself – you may end up in difficulty too.”
Stay Safe Near the Coast
The RNLI has issued clear safety advice for anyone near the coast during the storm:
- Stay well back from stormy seas and cliff edges.
- Check the weather forecast and tide times before heading out.
- Always carry a phone for emergencies.
- In an emergency, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
