26/09/2024 – Weather in Cornwall – Yellow Weather Warning For Rain
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain, effective from 06:00 today until 09:00 tomorrow, as heavy downpours are expected to impact parts of Cornwall and other regions. The warning highlights the possibility of flooding and disruption to transport services.
What to Expect
The weather warning suggests there is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses. The Met Office warns that there is a small chance that some properties could be flooded, potentially causing damage to buildings.
Transport may also be affected, with delays or cancellations to train and bus services possible where flooding occurs. Spray and flooding could create difficult driving conditions, and some roads may face closures. In some cases, communities could become cut off by flooded roads, with the possibility of fast-flowing or deep floodwater posing a danger to life.
Further Details
While some areas may escape the worst, heavy showers and thunderstorms are forecast for today, potentially becoming more organised across Wales, central, and eastern England during Thursday evening and into early Friday morning. Rainfall could reach 10-15 mm within an hour during the heaviest showers today, with some locations possibly seeing up to 30 mm over a few hours.
There remains some uncertainty regarding the specifics for Thursday evening and overnight, but some places may experience up to 20-30 mm of rain in just a few hours, and perhaps 40-60 mm in a span of 3-6 hours. Given the recent wet weather, there is a heightened risk of further flooding and disruptions to transport services.
How to Stay Safe
The Met Office has provided several tips to help the public stay safe during this period of adverse weather:
- Check if your property is at risk: If you live in a flood-prone area, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.
- Travel safely: Before setting out, check road conditions and bus and train timetables. If necessary, adjust your travel plans to avoid potential delays.
- Prepare for power cuts: Ensure you have torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other essential items on hand in case of a power outage.
- Stay informed: Keep up to date with the latest weather forecasts and warnings for your area. The situation can change rapidly, and being informed is the best way to stay safe.
Why the Warning is Yellow
The yellow warning signifies that while the likelihood of severe weather is low, the potential impact is considered medium. The start time for the warning has been brought forward due to heavy showers and thunderstorms expected throughout the day.
Stay safe and stay informed as this weather system passes through.
