24/11/2024 – Weather in Cornwall – Yellow Weather Warning For Wind & Rain

Published On: 24 November 2024Last Updated: 24 November 2024By

Storm Bert is sweeping across southern England and parts of Wales this weekend, bringing dangerous conditions and potential disruption. The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings—one for wind and one for rain—covering Saturday, 23rd November, to Sunday, 24th November.

Strong Winds and Coastal Risks

A yellow warning for wind is in place until 9:00 PM today. South or southwesterly gales, with gusts of 60-70 mph along exposed headlands and 50-60 mph inland, are expected. These winds are likely to cause dangerous coastal conditions and possible disruption to travel.

According to the Met Office:

  • “There is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected.”
  • “There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs.”
  • “There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.”
  • “There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris.”

The strongest winds are expected to ease in southwest England and Wales by Sunday morning but may persist in southeast England until the evening.

Heavy Rain and Flooding Concerns

The yellow warning for rain remains in effect until 11:45 PM tonight. Heavy rainfall, particularly across southern and southwest England, has led to concerns about flooding.

Rainfall totals of 50-75 mm are expected widely, with some areas, such as Dartmoor, potentially seeing up to 150 mm. This heavy rain, combined with strong winds, could exacerbate local impacts.

The Met Office warns:

  • “Homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.”
  • “Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.”
  • “Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life.”
  • “Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads.”

Staying Safe and Prepared

The Met Office advises taking precautions to reduce risks:

  • Secure loose outdoor items like bins, garden furniture, trampolines, and fences.
  • Avoid delays by checking road conditions and travel timetables, amending plans if necessary.
  • Prepare for possible power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, and essential supplies.
  • Stay safe near the coast, avoiding large waves and keeping dogs on leads near cliffs.

If you encounter an emergency on the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Why the Yellow Warning?

The yellow warning indicates a low likelihood of severe impacts but highlights the need to remain vigilant. Weather warnings can change quickly, so stay updated on the forecast and travel advice in your area.
