24/01/2025 – Weather in Cornwall – Yellow Weather Warning For Wind & Rain

Published On: 24 January 2025Last Updated: 24 January 2025By

A yellow weather warning has been issued for Cornwall today, with heavy rain and strong winds expected to cause disruption across the region. The Met Office advises residents and travellers to prepare for potential flooding, travel delays, and challenging conditions on coastal routes.

Yellow Weather Warning for Rain

The warning for rain is in effect from 00:00 to 09:00 today. A band of heavy rain moved northeast across the area overnight and is expected to clear by this morning. Rainfall amounts are predicted to be 15-25 mm widely, with up to 40-60 mm possible over higher ground. This could result in localised surface water flooding.

What to Expect:

  • Potential flooding of a few homes and businesses.
  • Bus and train services likely to face delays.
  • Longer journey times due to spray and flooding on roads.

How to Prepare:

  • Check if your property is at risk of flooding and prepare a flood plan or emergency flood kit.
  • Review travel plans by checking road conditions and public transport timetables.
  • Prepare for possible power cuts by gathering essentials like torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs.

Yellow Weather Warning for Wind

Storm Éowyn is bringing a spell of strong winds today. South to southwesterly winds will strengthen, with gusts of 40-50 mph likely for a time, particularly on exposed coasts and hills. Winds are expected to ease during the afternoon.

What to Expect:

  • Delays to road, rail, air, and ferry transport.
  • Coastal routes and communities potentially affected by spray and large waves.
  • Possible short-term loss of power and other services.
  • Difficult driving conditions for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges.

How to Stay Safe:

  • Check transport timetables and road conditions before travelling.
  • Exercise caution near the coast and cliffs to avoid large waves and slippery conditions. Keep dogs on leads near cliffs and be aware of your surroundings. In emergencies, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Why Are the Warnings Yellow?

Both warnings have been classified as having a medium likelihood of occurring but a low impact. However, the Met Office advises staying updated on the forecast, as conditions can change quickly.

Stay vigilant and prepared today.
