23/02/2025 – Weather in Cornwall – Yellow Weather Warning For Wind & Rain
The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for strong winds and heavy rain across parts of the UK today, with disruptions expected to travel, power supplies, and coastal areas. The warnings are in place throughout Sunday, urging people to take precautions and stay up to date with the latest forecasts.
Strong Winds Expected: Disruptions to Travel Likely
A yellow wind warning is active from 06:00 to 18:00 today, with gusts of 50-60mph expected, and potentially reaching 70mph in exposed coastal areas and higher ground.
According to the Met Office, southerly to southwesterly winds will strengthen through the morning, peaking late morning to early afternoon, before easing by the evening. Heavy rain will accompany the winds, making road conditions particularly hazardous.
What to Expect:
- Delays on roads, rail, air, and ferry transport.
- Bus and train services may be affected, with some journeys taking longer.
- Short-term power cuts possible.
- High-sided vehicles likely to face difficulties on exposed routes and bridges.
How to Stay Safe:
- Check road conditions and transport timetables before travelling.
- Prepare for possible power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack.
- Stay away from coastal areas where large waves could pose a danger.
- Be cautious near cliffs and keep dogs on a lead while walking.
- Stay updated on weather forecasts as warnings can change quickly.
Heavy Rain to Bring Risk of Localised Flooding
A yellow warning for rain is also in effect from 12:00 to 23:59 today, with concerns over flooding and longer journey times. The Met Office has warned that a broad band of heavy rain will move eastwards throughout the day, lasting for approximately 9-12 hours.
Rainfall amounts are expected to be 30-40mm widely, but in some areas, especially over high ground and south or southwest-facing upslopes, totals could reach 50-70mm.
What to Expect:
- Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible.
- Delays and cancellations on bus and train services.
- Flooding and spray on roads leading to longer journey times.
- Minor power supply interruptions possible.
How to Stay Safe:
- Check if your property is at risk of flooding and prepare a flood plan if necessary.
- Monitor road conditions and public transport updates before travelling.
- Have essential supplies ready in case of power cuts.
- Stay up to date with weather forecasts as warnings may change.
Why Are These Warnings Yellow?
The Met Office states that both warnings have a medium likelihood but a low overall impact. However, with strong winds and heavy rain combining, the risk of travel disruption, power outages, and flooding is still significant.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant and adjust their plans accordingly to avoid unnecessary risks.
