22/09/2024 – Weather in Cornwall – Yellow Weather Warning For Rain
The Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning for heavy rain, in effect from 00:00 to 23:59 today.
Residents across Cornwall and the wider Southwest should be prepared for potentially disruptive weather throughout the day.
What to Expect
According to the Met Office, areas of heavy rain could lead to hazardous conditions, including:
- Spray and Flooding: This could cause difficult driving conditions and potentially lead to some temporary road closures. Motorists are advised to check road conditions before setting out on journeys.
- Disruption to Transport: There is a risk of significant delays or cancellations to train and bus services. Travellers are urged to check timetables and make alternative plans if necessary.
- Flooded Roads: Rural communities may face temporary isolation due to flooded roads, with some homes and businesses potentially affected by floodwaters.
- Power Cuts: There is a small chance of power outages and loss of other essential services for some homes and businesses.
Areas Affected
The most intense rainfall is expected to hit parts of Wales and west-central England. However, heavy rain is also likely in Southwest England, particularly during the early hours of the morning. Showers may turn into slow-moving, thundery downpours later in the day, pushing north and west across the warning area.
The warning has been extended to cover areas in central and southeast England, reflecting an increased risk of disruption in these regions.
How to Stay Safe
To minimise the impact of the severe weather, the Met Office offers the following advice:
- Prepare for Flooding: If your property is at risk, consider putting together a flood plan and an emergency flood kit. Resources on how to protect property from flooding are available.
- Check Travel Plans: To avoid delays, check road conditions and transport timetables before setting off. Amending travel plans could help you avoid the worst of the disruptions.
- Prepare for Power Cuts: Gather torches, batteries, and other essential items in case of a power outage. It’s also worth keeping a mobile phone power pack handy.
Why a Yellow Warning?
The Met Office uses a colour-coded system to help communicate the likelihood and impact of weather events. A Yellow Warning indicates a low likelihood of severe conditions but a medium potential impact, meaning the situation could change rapidly. Keep up to date with the latest forecast to stay informed.
