20/10/2024 – Weather in Cornwall – Yellow Weather Warning For Rain
Storm Ashley Strikes: How Will Your Sunday Travel Plans Be Affected?
Yellow Weather Warning Issued for Heavy Rain
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain today, with heavy downpours expected across the region due to Storm Ashley. The warning is in place from 03:00 to 12:00 today, and there are concerns that transport and travel may be disrupted as the storm brings significant rainfall to the area.
Travel Disruption Likely
According to the Met Office, bus and train services are “probably affected,” meaning journey times could take longer than usual. Drivers are also warned of potential delays due to spray and flooding on roads, which will likely slow down traffic. The Met Office advises checking road conditions and timetables before setting out on any journeys this morning, especially as weather warnings can change quickly.
The statement also warns of potential interruptions to power supplies and other essential services during the storm. Power cuts are more manageable when people are prepared, so gathering torches, batteries, and mobile phone chargers is recommended.
Rainfall Totals and Flooding Risks
Most areas affected by the storm are expected to see 15-25 mm of rain, but some parts, particularly Dartmoor, could receive as much as 65 mm due to strong southerly winds. With recent wet weather already saturating the ground, this additional rainfall is “likely to cause some disruption” before clearing by late morning.
