Met Office Warning: Hours of Heavy Rain and Travel Disruption Set to Hit Tonight

Persistent Rain and Flood Risk Expected Across the Region

A Yellow Weather Warning for Rain has been issued by the Met Office from 6pm today (Friday 18th April) until 9am on Saturday 19th April, warning of prolonged rainfall that could cause flooding and significant disruption to travel.

The warning covers a wide area and highlights persistent and heavy rain, especially across higher ground such as Dartmoor, where up to 75mm is expected to fall by Saturday morning.

What to Expect

According to the Met Office, the following impacts are likely during the warning period:

  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible

  • Bus and train services probably affected, with journey times taking longer

  • Spray and flooding on roads likely to make journeys more difficult

  • Some power supply interruptions and disruption to other services also possible

When and Where

Rain will develop early Friday, becoming heavier and more persistent as the evening progresses. The worst of the weather is forecast overnight, with rainfall easing by late Saturday morning.

Widespread accumulations of 20 to 40mm are expected across the region, with 50 to 75mm likely over higher ground.

Conditions will also be quite windy, adding to the challenge for road users and transport services.

What Should You Do?

The Met Office has issued the following guidance:

“Check if your property could be at risk of flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.”

“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.”

“People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.”

“Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”

Why Is This a Yellow Warning?

The Yellow level means there’s a medium likelihood of a low impact. While not all areas will see disruption, those that do could experience localised flooding, travel delays, and minor service interruptions.
