Will Your Morning Commute Be Affected? Yellow Weather Warning for Snow and Ice in Cornwall

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across Cornwall, in effect from 12:15am to 11:00am today. The wintry conditions are expected to bring potential travel disruption and hazardous surfaces, particularly for those travelling by road or rail.

Travel Disruption Expected

Showers of rain and sleet near the coast, alongside snowfall inland and on higher ground, could create slippery conditions. Commuters may face longer journey times on roads, buses, and trains due to icy patches, particularly on untreated surfaces.

The Met Office warns that untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths may become dangerous, with an increased risk of injuries from slips and falls.

Cold Conditions Across Cornwall

Roads across Cornwall are already wet from earlier rainfall, and as temperatures drop below freezing, icy stretches are expected to form. A few centimetres of fresh snow could settle in areas above 100 metres.

Staying Safe in Wintry Weather

To stay safe during these conditions, the Met Office advises travellers to:

  • Plan your journey and allow extra time to reach your destination.
  • Check for road closures or public transport delays and adjust plans if needed.
  • If driving, carry essentials such as:
    • Warm clothing
    • Food and water
    • Blanket and torch
    • Ice scraper or de-icer
    • High visibility vest and warning triangle
    • In-car phone charger

Stay Updated

Weather conditions can change rapidly, and the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the latest forecast for your area.

The yellow warning reflects a medium likelihood of disruption with low impact—but caution is advised to minimise risks during your morning commute.
