Storm Darragh Brings Strong Winds to Cornwall: What You Need to Know

Yellow Weather Warning in Effect Today

A yellow weather warning for wind, issued by the Met Office, is in place from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm today as Storm Darragh continues to impact the UK. While the storm is gradually moving away, strong north to northeasterly winds remain a concern, especially across England and Wales.

What to Expect

  • Delays to road, rail, air, and ferry transport are likely, with bus and train journeys potentially taking longer than usual.
  • High-sided vehicles may face difficulties on exposed routes and bridges.
  • Coastal areas and sea fronts are expected to experience spray and large waves, impacting nearby communities.
  • Some short-term power outages and disruptions to other services may occur.

Strong Gusts Throughout the Day

Wind speeds inland could gust between 35-45 mph, with higher ground seeing gusts exceeding 50 mph. Coastal areas may experience stronger gusts of 50-60 mph, and some locations could see gusts nearing 70 mph during the morning. Winds are expected to ease gradually from the north throughout the day.

Advice for Staying Safe

The Met Office has provided practical advice for those affected:

  • Travel Planning: Check road conditions, bus, and train timetables before heading out, and consider altering plans if necessary.
  • Power Outages: Prepare for potential power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, mobile phone power packs, and other essentials.
  • Coastal Safety: Stay aware of large waves if visiting the coast. The Met Office warns that “large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea.” Take extra care near cliffs, plan your route, and keep dogs on leads.

Emergency Preparedness

If caught in an emergency near the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Why a Yellow Warning?

This weather warning reflects a high likelihood of disruption but a low overall impact, according to the Met Office. They recommend staying updated on local weather conditions and preparing accordingly.

Stay safe and plan ahead as Storm Darragh continues to ease.
