04/09/2024 – Weather in Cornwall – Yellow Weather Warning For Rain
Heavy Rain Warning Issued for Cornwall: Could Your Area Face Flash Flooding?”
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain across Cornwall, starting at 9:00 pm tonight and continuing through to 11:45 pm Friday. The alert warns of a potential increase in the risk of flooding, especially during Thursday, as the rain becomes more intense across the region.
What Could Happen in Cornwall?
Cornwall residents should be prepared for hazardous travel conditions as sudden downpours could cause spray, flash flooding, and road closures. Drivers are urged to take extra care, as the Met Office highlights a small chance of fast-flowing floodwater and difficult driving conditions. Public transport services in the region could also be affected, with the potential for train and bus delays or cancellations where flooding occurs.
There is also a small risk that homes and businesses in low-lying areas or near rivers could be flooded, resulting in damage to properties.
Rainfall Forecast and Worst-Hit Areas
Cornwall could see some of the heaviest downpours, particularly on Thursday, with rain intensifying overnight on Wednesday. According to the Met Office, where heavy rain does fall, it could bring 20-40 mm within just a couple of hours. In the worst-hit areas, rainfall totals could reach up to 100 mm over an extended period if repeated downpours occur.
While not every part of Cornwall will be affected equally, those in flood-prone areas should stay alert. The Met Office has expanded the warning westward, meaning that more areas of Cornwall are now included in the warning zone, although the risk may lessen slightly for northern and northeastern parts of the region.
Staying Safe During Floods
Cornwall residents are encouraged to prepare in advance, particularly those in areas that have experienced flash flooding before. The Met Office recommends considering a flood plan and an emergency flood kit in case conditions worsen.
If you’re travelling, check local road conditions and plan your route carefully to avoid flooded areas. For public transport users, stay up to date with potential disruptions by checking train and bus timetables.
What to Expect Next
Although the warning is currently classified as a low-likelihood, medium-impact event, the forecast could change as the rain begins to fall. The Met Office advises keeping a close eye on local forecasts, as weather patterns can shift, potentially increasing the risk to certain areas.
Stay safe, and stay prepared, as Cornwall braces for a period of heavy rain and possible flooding over the next 24 hours.
