Commercial Waste Now Accepted at Two Cornwall Recycling Centres

From this week, businesses and traders can now legally dispose of their commercial waste at the St Erth and Launceston Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs), thanks to a new service introduced by Cornwall Council.

The chargeable service, launched on Monday 1st July, is only available to customers who book in advance. According to the Council, it plans to roll the service out to other HWRCs across Cornwall in the coming months.

What You Can Bring and How Much It Costs

The service covers a range of waste types, including bulky items, garden waste and building materials. Prices vary depending on the material and the size of the vehicle or trailer used to bring it in.

There are set charges for certain large items such as sofas, while other types of trade waste are charged based on the size of the load.

A full list of prices is available on the Cornwall Council website.

What Businesses Need to Know Before Visiting

All visitors to the sites must book a slot online. This includes trade waste customers, who can do so using this booking form.

Trade waste customers do not need a van or trailer permit to use the service, but must hold a valid waste carrier licence in order to bring commercial waste to the sites.

Cornwall Council warns that it is illegal for businesses or traders of any size to dispose of waste using the household waste service. Full legal guidance is available here.

Making Disposal More Practical for Businesses

Loic Rich, portfolio holder for Environment and Climate Change at Cornwall Council, said:

“We know that many businesses have commercial waste collection contracts in place but for some businesses and traders who work in different locations, it may be more practical and convenient for them to bring their waste to the sites.
I hope this new service makes it easier for local businesses and traders to dispose of their waste responsibly and legally.”

Mark Hillson, Contract Manager at SUEZ, added:

“This new service at St Erth and Launceston HWRCs gives local tradespeople and small businesses a practical, compliant way to manage their waste.”
