Are Your Batteries Sparking Trouble? Cornwall Council Warns Against Disposal with Rubbish
Christmas Batteries: A Fire Hazard?
With the festive season in full swing, Cornwall Council is urging residents to think twice before disposing of batteries from Christmas decorations in their household waste. Batteries tossed into rubbish can pose a serious fire risk in collection lorries.
Instead, Cornwall Council recommends recycling batteries at designated points, such as supermarkets, DIY stores, libraries, or the county’s Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs).
Where Can You Recycle Batteries?
Cornwall Council does not currently collect batteries as part of the household recycling service. However, most types of batteries, including button batteries and battery packs from laptops, phones, power tools, and remote controls, can be taken to the following locations for safe recycling:
- Household Waste and Recycling Centres
- Supermarkets
- DIY Stores
- Libraries
To locate your nearest battery recycling point, residents can use the battery bank recycling point finder.
Handy Tips for Recycling Batteries
Cornwall Council suggests finding an old box to collect used batteries until it’s full, then taking it to a recycling point. Alternatively, store batteries in reusable shopping bags to drop off during your next supermarket visit.
It’s important to note that only household waste from Cornwall is accepted at recycling centres, and commercial waste is strictly prohibited.

This festive season, let’s keep Cornwall’s waste collection services safe and fire-free by recycling responsibly.
