Truro Leads the UK in Green Energy Interest, New Research Shows

Published On: 20 February 2024Last Updated: 20 February 2024By

In a significant revelation, new research conducted by 100Green has positioned Truro as the UK city with the highest level of interest in green energy. This discovery aligns with the increasing global demand for environmental sustainability and the UK’s ambitious 2050 net zero target. According to 100Green, the UK’s exclusive provider of 100% green gas and renewable electricity, there’s a notable shift in public attitude towards green energy, with over two-fifths (42%) of Britons expressing a willingness to switch to green energy suppliers. This is further evidenced by a 23% rise in online searches for ‘green energy company’ over the past year, underlining the growing consensus on the importance of reducing household emissions, which account for approximately 26% of the UK’s total emissions.

The research, which analyzed over 30 green energy-related search terms, revealed that Truro, a city in Cornwall, leads the pack with the highest average online searches per 100,000 people for queries including ‘green energy tariffs’, ‘renewable energy suppliers’, ‘why is green energy important’, and ‘solar panels’. Cornwall’s status as the UK’s leading renewable energy producer, thanks to its extensive coastline and high sunshine levels, likely contributes to the heightened interest among its residents. Remarkably, about 40% of Cornwall’s electricity is generated from renewable sources, with the county striving to achieve net zero emissions twenty years ahead of the national goal.

Following closely behind Truro in the green energy interest rankings are Ely, Ripon, and Bangor, each showcasing significant per capita online search volumes for green energy. Below is a breakdown of the top 10 UK cities showing keen interest in green energy, according to 100Green’s research:

City Country ‘Green’ Energy Searches per Capita (per 100,000)
Truro England 109
Ely England 91
Ripon England 75
Bangor Wales 68
Durham England 61
Stirling Scotland 58
Chichester England 58
Salisbury England 55
Perth Scotland 51
Lichfield England 48

Doug Stewart, Chairman of 100Green, commented on the findings, expressing optimism that the recent reduction in energy prices will motivate more individuals to explore green energy options. He highlighted the critical challenge of transitioning away from fossil fuels and applauded the increasing priority of this issue among the public. 100Green stands out as the sole provider offering a tariff free from fossil fuels, suggesting that the minor premium for switching to green energy equates to the cost of a weekly takeaway cappuccino.

This research underscores a growing trend towards environmental responsibility across the UK, with Truro leading the charge. The movement towards green energy is not only a testament to public awareness but also reflects the practical steps being taken by communities to combat climate change.
