Truro Farmers Market Hosts Successful “Battle of the Bakeries” Competition
Truro Farmers Market recently celebrated its vibrant “Battle of the Bakeries” event, marking a significant highlight of the ST PIRAN’S CELEBRATION MARKET at LEMON QUAY. This year, the event saw an impressive turnout with over 50 pasty entries, as the community and local bakers showcased their culinary skills in a friendly but competitive environment.
The competition, introduced for the first time this year, featured categories such as “Traditional Cornish” and “Rest of the World” public competitions, along with a professional bakers’ contest. The event was a feast for the senses, filled with live music, a full market of local traders, and, of course, the much-anticipated pasty tasting.
In the “Traditional Cornish” public competition, Hannah Saint emerged as the victor, winning the title of Best Overall Winner based on crimp, pastry, and filling. Saint was awarded a trophy and prizes including food and drink at Skinner’s Brewery The Tapyard Riverside. The second place was secured by last year’s winner, Linda Johns, hinting at a potential rematch next year.
The “Rest of the World” category saw Adam Elson taking the top spot, with his prize including dinner and dessert for two at The Cornish Italian and a copy of the TFM COOKBOOK. Garth Thompson followed in second place, winning a date night at Plaza Cinema Truro.
For the younger chefs, the under 18’s category celebrated another win by Abigail Symons, encouraging new challengers to step forward next year.
The professional “Battle of the Bakeries Champion 2024” title was awarded to The Butchers Bakehouse, with Da Bara Bakery HQ taking second place and Berrymans Bakery Ltd with the best vegan pasty with Philps Famous Pasties taking second place.
The Truro Farmers Market expressed gratitude towards all participants and spectators for making the event a success and is eagerly looking forward to continuing this tradition.
As the Truro Farmers Market celebrates its 25th year, the “Battle of the Bakeries” has become a testament to the community’s enduring passion for local cuisine and tradition.
