Truro Charity Coffee Morning Raises Nearly £1,000 for Christian Aid
Generous charity supporters in Truro gathered for a coffee morning, raising almost £1,000 as part of a national appeal during Christian Aid Week.
The event, organised annually by Sue and Barry Pettit alongside Jenny Kwee from the Truro Christian Aid Group, featured refreshments, a stall with various goods, and a raffle.
A Celebration of Hope
Sue Pettit explained the significance of Christian Aid Week: “Every year, during this appeal, people across Britain and Ireland have seven days and so many ways to raise funds to support their global neighbours, in a celebration of hope for a fairer world.” The Truro event included a plant stall, home produce, crafts, and opportunities to learn more about Christian Aid’s work.
This year’s coffee morning saw favourable weather and raised £920.20. Sue added, “There is more to add to that total which could mean we reach £1,000.” Prior to the coffee morning, a bread-and-cheese lunch was held at Kenwyn Church to support the cause.
Supporting Vulnerable Communities
Christian Aid Week, running from May 12–18, focuses on empowering vulnerable communities in Burundi. This densely populated and impoverished African country relies heavily on agriculture and faces severe challenges from climate change, including droughts, floods, and landslides. The global cost of living crisis has exacerbated these issues, with over 70% of the population living in poverty and more than half of the children chronically malnourished.
Christian Aid has been active in Burundi since 1995, initially providing humanitarian aid during civil conflict. Today, the organisation works with local partners to establish Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs). These community-led groups enable people to save and borrow money, fostering small businesses and providing reliable incomes. This support allows families to eat regularly, access medical care, and build safer homes.
Make a Difference
Christian Aid Week provides numerous ways for people to contribute and make a difference. For more information on how to support these efforts, visit Christian Aid.
This successful event in Truro highlights the community’s dedication to global solidarity and the ongoing efforts to create sustainable solutions for those in need.
