Truro Brothers on the Path to Olympic Glory – Could They Be the Next Sporting Superstars?

Published On: 29 January 2025Last Updated: 29 January 2025By

Two brothers from Truro, Isaac Murray and Logan Murray, are making waves in the world of sport after being selected for the next stage of the national Find Your Greatness campaign, which aims to identify future Olympic athletes.

Rising Stars in Multiple Sports

The competition saw thousands of hopefuls apply, with 700 athletes chosen to compete at various venues across the UK in December. Based on their performances, Logan has advanced in shooting, while Isaac has progressed in rowing and skeleton, the high-speed winter sliding sport.

Both are already making an impact in their respective fields. Isaac, 21, won the U23 Irish national championships in discus and is also being considered for the Irish dodgeball team ahead of the European Championships in June. Logan, 16, has excelled in multiple sports, earning national titles in 400m sprinting and representing England and Team Atlanta at the UK School Games.

Their talents in discus are particularly impressive—Isaac is ranked number one in Ireland, while Logan holds the top ranking in England.

A Family Dedicated to Success

Parents Michelle and Steve Murray have encouraged all four of their children—Maiya-Jade, 25, Tommy, 23, Isaac, and Logan—to pursue their individual talents. For Isaac and Logan, that has meant travelling 2,500 miles last year alone to compete, a commitment that comes with significant financial challenges.

Michelle credits the GLL Sports Foundation (GSF) awards with helping them continue their journey:

“The annual awards have helped so much. I honestly don’t believe the boys would have achieved what they have without them. Isaac is studying sports science at Nottingham University and has free membership to any of GLL’s 240 leisure centres to train, and Logan wouldn’t be where he is now without the support he gets from GLL to buy equipment and access Better gyms free throughout Cornwall and the rest of the country.”

Overcoming Challenges

Logan, who lives with autism, was once reluctant to take part in physical activity. His journey began at Cornwall Athletics Academy, where he was introduced to long jump before moving on to discus, shot put, and sprinting. Now part of the Youth Talent Programme and Para Academy with England Athletics, he has gone on to win countless medals and was recently awarded the Mike Hitchens Shield at the Cornwall Athletics Academy awards.

Michelle spoke about how much sport has meant to Logan:

“Logan has found himself in sport.”

Supporting Cornwall’s Athletes

GLL, which operates nine leisure centres in Cornwall on behalf of the council under the Better brand, has awarded nearly £70,000 in GSF funding to 116 Cornish athletes in 2024, including Isaac and Logan.

Michelle encourages other aspiring athletes to apply:

“It’s a great scheme and I can’t recommend applying highly enough.”

The application deadline is 20th February 2025. Those interested can apply at https://www.gllsportfoundation.org/.
