Memorial Post Box Installed at Penmount Crematorium for Letters to Lost Loved Ones
New white post box opens at Penmount Memorial Gardens
A special “Letters to Lost Loved Ones” post box has been installed at Penmount Memorial Gardens near Truro, giving people the chance to post messages, cards and letters to loved ones who have died.
The white box, located within the 28-acre grounds of Penmount Crematorium, is open to everyone and does not require a stamp. Messages can be posted regardless of when or where someone passed away. The contents are not read by staff and are later shredded and composted.
The crematorium and gardens are owned and managed by Cornwall Council.
Inspired by a child’s idea
The idea for the memorial post box came from a nine-year-old girl in Nottingham, who wanted a way to write to her grandparents after they passed away. Similar post boxes have since been installed in cemeteries and gardens across the UK.
Launch event this Sunday
The new post box will be officially launched at this year’s Open Garden Event and Remembrance Service on Sunday 29th June.
The event runs from 1pm to 4pm, with a remembrance service at 2.30pm for anyone who wishes to attend. Visitors can enjoy cream teas and drinks on the lawn, with live entertainment from local musician Jamie Bridger.
A place of reflection
Loic Rich, Cornwall Council’s portfolio holder for Environment and Climate Change, said:
“I’m delighted that the memorial post box is in place, and I hope it brings people comfort – as this scheme has in other areas. It really is such a lovely idea.
The gardens at Penmount Crematorium are truly breathtaking and I encourage people to visit for themselves and join us for this year’s open day.”
Penmount Memorial Gardens are open to the public year-round.
