Have Your Say: Safer Cycling and Walking Plans for Malpas Road, Truro Unveiled

Published On: 29 November 2024Last Updated: 29 November 2024By

Plans to enhance safety and improve walking and cycling facilities along Malpas Road in Truro are set to go to public consultation from Thursday, 5th December.

The proposals, part of the Truro Town Deal’s Green Transport project, aim to create better connections to local assets like the Newham Trail, Malpas, Boscawen Park, and the national cycle network. With Truro receiving £23.6m in government funding under the Town Deal programme, this scheme marks the first to be delivered within the Green Transport project.

Proposed Improvements

The project team has been working on measures to make Malpas Road safer and more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists, including:

  • New Crossing Points: Connecting pedestrians to the riverside with improved access to footpaths.
  • Traffic Calming Features: Slowing vehicles to enhance safety.
  • Landscaped Green Space: Transforming the Pendeen Road roundabout into a ‘T’ junction with added planting, paving, seating, and better footpath links.

Phased Delivery to Minimise Disruption

The scheme will roll out in phases to reduce disruption, starting with the creation of the landscaped green space at the Pendeen Road junction. This phase is scheduled to run from January to March 2025.

Subsequent phases will include:

  • Improvements to footway kerbing sections.
  • Installation of new crossing points.
  • Minor junction upgrades and resurfacing works.

The entire project is expected to finish by the end of 2025.

Managing Road Closures

Due to space constraints, some sections of Malpas Road will need to close during certain phases of the work. While temporary traffic lights will be used where possible, road closures will be necessary for tasks like constructing new crossing points and kerbing improvements in narrower sections of the carriageway.

  • Overnight Closures: These will ensure minimal disruption, with noisier work completed during the evening.
  • Advance Notice: Residents and road users will be informed ahead of closures to plan their journeys.
  • Emergency Access: Access for emergency services will always be maintained.

The consultation, led by Cormac in partnership with the Truro Green Transport project team, runs for three weeks from 5th December. Feedback will shape the final design for the scheme.

Alan Stanhope, Chair of Truro Town Deal Board, said:

“Our vision with the Truro Town Deal investment was to create a ‘connected river city’ and the Green Transport project brings everything together by encouraging people to use active travel such as walking and cycling to move around the city.

“These plans are set to improve access along Malpas Road and make it safer and more pleasant to use the riverside as a pedestrian or cyclist – This is a chance to view the proposals and have your say.”

How to Participate

Details of the proposals, including maps and drawings, will be available on Cornwall Council’s transport consultation page: www.cornwall.gov.uk/TrafficConsult from 5th December.
