Crackdown on Truro Shoplifting and Anti-Social Behaviour: Police Take Action
Truro’s neighbourhood policing team, in collaboration with partners such as Safer Cornwall and Cornwall Young People, recently carried out a Safer Business Action Day (SaBA) aimed at addressing shoplifting and anti-social behaviour in the city centre.
This day of action was designed to reassure the community that the police are taking these issues seriously and working towards creating a safer environment for everyone in Truro.
Focused Efforts on High-Visibility Patrols
The primary focus of the day was to target areas identified as hotspots for anti-social behaviour and shoplifting. With support from volunteer Special Constables and Truro Street Rangers, the team conducted high-visibility foot patrols in these targeted locations. This approach not only aimed to detect and deter retail crime but also to provide a reassuring presence for residents and businesses alike.
Sergeant Richie Wilson highlighted the importance of such initiatives, stating, “Days of action allow the Truro, Perranporth and Tregony local policing team to come together and focus on a specific issue. In this case, our focus was on high visibility community policing to detect and deter retail crime in our city centre.”
Supporting Local Businesses and Youth
In addition to patrolling, Safer Cornwall and Cornwall Young People visited businesses that had reported incidents of young people accessing rooftops. Their goal was to offer support and advice around public safety, aiming to prevent any serious incidents. The team also conducted follow-up visits to local businesses where female staff members had previously faced anti-social behaviour, listening to their concerns and providing personal safety advice.
Gathering Intelligence and Providing Reassurance
The day of action also involved visiting businesses that had been targeted by shoplifting in the past. The police gathered intelligence, provided reassurance, and offered advice on how to prevent future incidents. High-visibility patrols were carried out throughout the day to detect and prevent shoplifting behaviour.
Community Engagement and Reporting
The local policing team remains committed to ensuring that Truro is a safe place to live, work, and visit. They encourage residents and business owners to engage with them, raise concerns, and get to know the officers better. The team’s events calendar, available on their website, provides opportunities for the community to meet with officers at police surgeries.
