Cornwall’s Largest Solar Carport Powers Up at New County Hall: A Model for Renewable Energy in the Public Sector

Cornwall Council has taken a significant step towards sustainable energy, officially commissioning the largest solar carport in Cornwall at its head office in New County Hall, Truro. Installed by SunGift Solar, this state-of-the-art facility is part of Cornwall Council’s ongoing efforts to increase its renewable energy capacity and cut reliance on the National Grid.

Expanding Cornwall’s Renewable Energy Capacity

As part of a broader commitment to expanding its renewable energy capabilities, Cornwall Council aims to boost its renewable energy output from 8 megawatts to 18 megawatts by 2030. The solar carport, which comprises 543 high-efficiency solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, has an impressive capacity of 230 kW and is projected to generate 200,000 kWh of clean energy each year. Approximately 90% of this energy will be used on-site at New County Hall, reducing the Council’s dependence on external power sources and contributing any surplus energy to Cornwall’s renewable supply.

“This is Cornwall’s largest solar canopy and a flagship scheme in our ambitious programme to increase our renewable energy and decarbonise our council buildings,” said Cllr Martyn Alvey, Cornwall’s cabinet member for environment and climate change. He added, “It underlines our firm commitment to tackling the climate emergency and we hope this exciting project could act as a demonstrator and blueprint for similar projects elsewhere. It also links to our developing Local Area Energy Plan, which is an opportunity for all residents to have their say on the future of energy generation in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.”

Environmental and Practical Benefits of the Solar Canopy

Located over the visitors’ car park, the solar carport not only provides a sustainable energy source but also offers shelter to vehicles. SunGift Solar estimates an annual carbon saving of 50 tonnes from the carport, marking it as a milestone in Cornwall’s journey to achieving its climate goals.

Chloe Linton, Commercial Project Manager at SunGift Solar, highlighted the project’s impact, stating, “This project demonstrates the immense potential of transforming car parks into green hubs for clean, renewable energy. The solar carport at New County Hall will help Cornwall Council cut energy costs, reduce carbon emissions, and provide a sustainable energy source for years to come.” Chloe also praised SunGift’s installation team, noting their dedication to completing the project on schedule.

SunGift Solar’s Continued Leadership in Renewable Energy

SunGift Solar’s expertise in solar installations has helped transform various underutilised spaces into energy-generating assets across the UK. Known for designing custom solar PV systems, the company enables businesses and public organisations to maximise renewable energy use.

In addition to the New County Hall installation, SunGift Solar has previously led innovative projects such as the UK’s first solar carports for Exeter City Council and a 121.975kWp solar carport at Exe Valley Leisure Centre, which now meets around 70% of the centre’s energy needs.
