Construction Set to Begin on Boscawen Park Sports Hub in August

Construction starts 4th August with pitch closures through to Spring 2026

Truro’s long-anticipated Sports Hub at Boscawen Park is about to take a major step forward. Work is due to begin during the week commencing 4th August 2025 on the new £5.2 million development, which will bring a mix of indoor and outdoor sports and leisure facilities to the city.

Led by Truro City Council and funded by the Truro Town Deal, the project is part of wider plans to regenerate the city and improve community infrastructure. The new multi-use Sports Hub building will feature changing facilities and versatile indoor space for sports, conferences, workshops, arts and crafts, and community events.

What’s being built and improved?

The works will be carried out by Inscapes and Fox Construction and will include:

  • A new multi-use sports building at Boscawen Park

  • Upgraded grass pitches with improved drainage for year-round use

  • A resurfaced riverside walk

  • An extended and improved pétanque (boules) pitch

While the pitches will be closed from August and remain off-limits until the grass is fully established, other parts of the park will stay open. This includes the children’s play area, café, formal gardens and tennis courts. The existing pétanque pitch will also remain accessible for most of the works.

Disruption expected, but benefits on the way

Chris Wells, Mayor of Truro, said:
“This is a major step forward for our Sports Hub project which will produce positive benefits for the city, our residents and businesses, and for visitors.
We recognise that there will inevitably be some disruption during the works and apologise for any inconvenience to users of the park, visitors and the wider local community. During the past few months we have worked with users to help them find alternative sites while the pitches are being improved and will continue to work closely with the contractor and our partners, including Truro Town Deal Board and Cornwall Council, to keep disruption to a minimum.
Once completed the sports hub and improved pitches will be important community assets and I am looking forward to seeing them in use next Spring.”

Pitch drainage works are expected to be completed by the end of September 2025, but the grass will need time to grow. Competitive sport on the new playing surfaces is expected to return by April 2026.

“It’s great to see work getting underway and the Town Deal programme building momentum. Boscawen Sports Hub is a key part of our wider ambition to create a healthier, more connected, and more vibrant place to live. We know how much this new facility will mean to local clubs, families, and community groups, and we’re proud to be helping to make it happen.”

Malpas duck pond also set for work

In addition to the Sports Hub, plans are in motion to dredge the duck pond at Malpas, with work starting as soon as possible.

The Sports Hub is one of several projects supported by the £23.6 million Truro Town Deal, secured in partnership with Cornwall Council, to boost the local economy and support regeneration across the city. Cornwall Council is the lead authority for Town Deals and supports the governance role of the Truro Town Deal Board.
