LYNHER Nears Return: Final Refit Work Underway After Key Milestone
Vessel moves out of drydock as new control system installation begins
The LYNHER ferry is one step closer to returning to service after completing a major stage in its refit. The drydock was “flooded up” yesterday (Wednesday, 21st May), marking a significant milestone in the overhaul process.
Drydock Phase Completed
While in drydock, the LYNHER underwent extensive work, including replacing obsolete systems and equipment on the prows and hull, along with a full repaint above and below the waterline. Inspections by the Tamar Crossings team and regulators confirmed the vessel’s safety for another five years.
Additional essential repairs were identified during these out-of-water checks, extending the time spent in drydock.
Cutting-Edge System Installation Begins
Work also began on replacing the outdated computer control system, which is being supplied by Rolls Royce. This next phase requires the ferry to be in the water, and the LYNHER has now been moved to a berth alongside the dock.
The Rolls Royce system will be integrated with the ferry’s existing equipment by the manufacturer, supported by Tamar Crossings’ technical team. Once installed, the system will undergo Harbour Acceptance Testing (HAT) to confirm its performance and reliability.
Two Weeks Until Testing Complete
The next phase of the refit begins today (Thursday, 22nd May) and is expected to take two weeks. If HAT is successful and weather conditions are favourable, the LYNHER is expected to return to Torpoint by mid-June.
The revised timeline accounts for poor weather at the start of the refit and unexpected repairs that were only discovered during drydock inspections.
Preparing for Service
Once back in Torpoint, the ferry will be prepared for service. This includes removing towing gear, reconnecting to the chains, restoring lifesaving and firefighting equipment and seating, and conducting Sea Acceptance Trials (SAT). Crew training and familiarisation with the new system will also take place.
This final stage should take up to five days, followed by inspections from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Lloyds Register before the vessel is cleared to return to service.
Current Service Continues
The Torpoint Ferry service remains operational with two ferries in use. These run every 15 minutes from 06:30 to 22:00, with a single half-hourly night service between 22:00 and 06:30.
