A30 Overnight Closures – 04/03/2024 to 08/03/2024

The A30 between Chiverton Cross and Carland Cross roundabouts is undergoing major improvements as part of the government’s Road Investment Strategy.

This initiative, which received the green light from the Secretary of State for Transport on 6 February 2020, aims to upgrade the stretch to dual carriageway standard, improving traffic flow and reducing congestion.

The project, benefiting from an £8 million contribution from the European Regional Development Fund towards development costs, with an additional £12 million for construction, marks a milestone in regional infrastructure development. The construction, awarded to the Costain Jacobs partnership, began in March 2020 amidst challenges posed by Covid-19 but progressed steadily with significant groundwork and structural enhancements.

As part of the ongoing efforts to complete this extensive project, overnight closures have been scheduled from Monday, 4th March, to Friday, 8th March, between 8 pm and 6 am, from A30 Boxheater to Scorrier. These closures are crucial for work on the Chiverton flyover and other key infrastructure elements along the route.

To minimise disruption, traffic diversions are in place via the B3285, A3075, and B3277, with alternative routes for HGVs. Local access at the new Chiverton interchange and via the B3284 at Chybucca will remain open, ensuring minimal impact on local residents and businesses.

The project’s scope includes the construction of 10 new underpasses and underbridges, three new bridges over the new road, refurbishment of an existing structure, over 2.6 million cubic metres of earthworks, 33 new culverts and wildlife crossings, nearly 29 miles of new highway drainage, over 12 miles of wildlife-proof fencing, new badger setts, bat roosts, and 8 miles of Cornish hedge. These efforts underscore the project’s commitment not only to transportation improvements but also to environmental and wildlife protection.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys during the closures. For more information on the A30 dual carriageway layout and connections with the existing A30, along with detailed project designs and planning, click here.

This comprehensive upgrade reflects a significant investment in the region’s infrastructure, promising enhanced road safety, reduced travel times, and a boost to the local economy upon completion.
