We have another series of overnight closures for the A30, a crucial roadway connecting Boxheater and Chiverton. This temporary measure, set to commence on Monday, April 8, through to Thursday, April 11, will see the road closed from 8pm until 6am each night.
The closures are not stopping there; a subsequent full weekend closure is scheduled from Friday, April 12, at 8pm until Monday, April 15, at 6am.
Diverting the Flow: Alternative Routes
The closures will affect a wide range of vehicles, including HGVs and high-sided vehicles, which are vital for the local economy and supply chains. To mitigate the impact, traffic will be diverted via the B3285 and A3075, ensuring that there is still a way for commuters and transporters to reach their destinations, albeit with some added time to their journeys.
Behind the Closure: A Strategic Upgrade
The reason behind these disruptions is part of a broader initiative to upgrade the A30 between Chiverton Cross and Carland Cross roundabouts. This stretch of road, recognised for its strategic importance to the region’s transportation network, is currently undergoing significant improvements. The upgrade, which started in March 2020 and is expected to conclude in 2024, boasts a budget of £330 million. This project not only aims to enhance the traffic flow and safety on this vital route but also demonstrates the commitment to maintaining and improving the Strategic Road Network across the UK.
Funding the Future
A significant portion of the project’s funding comes from both local and international sources, including an £8 million contribution from the European Regional Development Fund towards the development costs. An additional £12 million has been allocated for the construction phase, underlining the economic and strategic importance of the A30 in Cornwall and beyond.
Staying Informed
For motorists and local residents looking for more information or updates on the closure and the upgrade project, Cornwall Council directs enquiries to the National Highways’ dedicated page for the A30 closure update. This resource is intended to provide timely updates and essential details to ensure minimal disruption and optimal communication with the public.
As Cornwall braces for these temporary inconveniences, the focus remains on the long-term benefits that the A30 upgrade is expected to bring, from improved safety and reduced congestion to enhanced economic opportunities for the region.

As the project progresses, further information, including future closure dates and diversion routes, will be made available through the National Highways website, ensuring the public remains informed and prepared for upcoming travel adjustments.
