South West EV Charging Surge: Why More Drivers Than Ever Are Switching to Electric
Public chargers in the South West grow by nearly a third in just 12 months
Electric vehicle (EV) drivers in the South West now have more reasons to travel with confidence, as nearly 1,300 public chargepoints have been added across the region since April 2024. The number of public chargers now exceeds 5,500, making it easier than ever for EV owners to find a socket nearby.
This 30% increase highlights ongoing progress to support the switch to electric, helping drivers across the region stay connected and reducing range anxiety for those making the transition.
Backed by Government Investment
The growth comes as part of wider government plans to boost Britain’s EV infrastructure. Over £2.3 billion is being invested to support British carmakers, protect jobs and power growth as part of the Plan for Change.
Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood welcomed the progress, saying:
“We want to make sure that drivers in the South West are always close to an electric vehicle charging device. That’s why it’s great to see the number of public charging devices in the region growing by 30% since April last year, taking us to more than 5,500 public charging devices in the South West.
“We’re investing £2.3 billion to help drivers switch to electric vehicles while putting money in the pockets of hardworking people by protecting jobs and backing British carmakers as part of the Plan for Change.”
Why There’s Never Been a Better Time to Switch
The benefits of EV ownership continue to grow:
- Save up to £1,100 a year when charging mostly at home compared to using petrol.
- As little as 2p per mile to run if charging at home.
- Affordable options: Half of used electric cars are priced under £20,000, with 29 brand new models available with an RRP below £30,000.
- Impressive range: The average new EV can travel 290 miles on a full charge — enough for two weeks of driving for most people.
- Longevity: EVs are expected to last as long as traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.
- Lower emissions: Over its lifetime, an EV typically produces just one-third of the harmful greenhouse gases of a petrol car.
- Easier charging and repairs: More skilled technicians are available, along with 24/7 helplines, contactless payments and up-to-date chargepoint locations.
With the number of public chargers climbing rapidly and support continuing to grow, drivers in the South West are better placed than ever to make the switch to electric.
