£50m Investment to Transform Cornwall’s Public Transport
In a significant move towards enhancing public transport within Cornwall, the Government has announced a £50 million funding package.
This substantial investment is set to revolutionise the transport network in Cornwall through the implementation of the Mid-Cornwall Metro Scheme.
Transport Secretary’s Visit Marks Progress
During a visit to Newquay Station on Wednesday, 27 March, Transport Secretary Mark Harper, accompanied by local MP Steve Double, engaged with regional leaders to review the advancement of this critical transport project. The scheme promises to forge stronger connections between Cornwall’s communities, offering improved access to employment, education, and business opportunities.
A New Era of Rail Services
Slated for initial implementation by May next year and full completion by the end of 2025, the project will introduce an hourly coast-to-coast train service. This service will connect major urban centres across Cornwall, including Newquay, St Austell, Truro, and Falmouth, marking a new chapter in the region’s rail service history.
Infrastructure Enhancements on the Horizon
Key infrastructural improvements are part of the scheme’s rollout, including the addition of a second platform at Newquay Station and a new “passing loop” on the tracks. These enhancements are aimed at boosting the line’s capacity, allowing for more frequent services.
Passengers will also benefit from modernised, digital ticketing solutions. This innovative approach enables travellers to tap-in and tap-out, ensuring they are always charged the best possible fare without the need to pre-plan or search for specific tickets.
Statements from Key Figures
Mark expressed his enthusiasm for the project’s progression, highlighting it as a pivotal part of the government’s plan to elevate Cornwall’s local transport infrastructure. He remarked, “Passengers in Cornwall will experience a more frequent rail service that’s fit for the future.”
Promoting Active Travel
The scheme also aims to encourage active travel modes, such as walking and cycling, by implementing improvements around stations. These include new cycling parking facilities, bike hire options, widened footpaths, and enhanced crossing points.
Collaboration for Community Benefit
The project is a collaborative effort involving Cornwall Council, Great Western Railway (GWR), and Network Rail. It promises to double the number of services between Newquay and Par, adding an estimated 700,000 seats per year for passengers.
Joe Graham from GWR underscored the project’s benefits, stating it would significantly enhance connectivity for people, students, and leisure opportunities, thereby supporting the local community and economy.
Marcus Jones of Network Rail highlighted the recent track and signalling upgrades in Devon and Cornwall as foundational work for the Mid-Cornwall Metro. He emphasised the project’s potential to facilitate safer, more accessible, and environmentally friendly travel options.
Local Government’s Commitment
Cllr Richard Williams-Pears expressed the Council’s dedication to this scheme, viewing it as a cornerstone for achieving a sustainable and thriving Cornwall. He noted the project’s importance in driving sustainable growth and levelling up the local economy.
With the Government and Cornwall Council’s backing, the Mid-Cornwall Metro Scheme is set to redefine public transport in the region, enhancing connectivity and supporting sustainable development initiatives.
