Pendeen Community Heritage Secures New 99-Year Lease for Geevor Tin Mine Museum
In a significant development for Cornwall’s heritage sector, Pendeen Community Heritage (PCH), the charity managing Geevor Tin Mine Museum since 2001, has been granted a new 99-year lease by Cornwall Council. This long-term agreement marks a milestone in the charity’s history, following years of efforts to secure a stable future for the site.
The new lease agreement promises to bring a host of benefits and responsibilities, paving the way for PCH to engage more deeply with the community and offer enhanced opportunities for preserving the area’s mining heritage. The museum, recognised for its contribution to local employment, education, and tourism, is set to continue its award-winning visitor experience and industry-leading educational programs.
John Swarbrooke, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Geevor, highlighted the significance of the lease in enabling the charity to pursue external funding for various projects aimed at realising an ambitious vision for the museum. He noted the crucial conservation work undertaken by Cornwall Council over the past two years, which has contributed to securing Geevor’s long-term future.
Martyn Alvey, Cornwall Council’s portfolio holder for environment and climate change, underscored the importance of Geevor Tin Mine Museum to both the local community and the broader Cornwall region. As a key centre within the World Heritage Site, Geevor plays a vital role in providing educational and interpretive resources about the area’s mining heritage. Alvey expressed optimism about the ongoing partnership between the council and PCH, emphasising their shared commitment to enhancing public access and appreciation of this significant historic site.
With the new lease in place, Geevor Tin Mine Museum is poised for nearly a century of continued preservation and engagement with Cornwall’s rich mining legacy, ensuring its stories and contributions are celebrated for generations to come.
