Tolvaddon firefighter bows out after 29 years of service

There were mixed emotions at Tolvaddon Community Fire Station on Monday 3rd June as Watch Manager Lee Thomas completed his final shift before retirement.

Lee, who joined the fire service in 1996, spent his last day on duty doing what he’s done for nearly three decades – helping others. He responded to a road traffic collision in Perranporth, where he used crash rescue equipment to release two casualties, and later helped rescue a horse that had become stuck in a bog in Minions, East Cornwall.

A fitting end to a long career

The second call-out meant Lee arrived late to a surprise retirement party organised by his family and friends, but the incidents were described by the station as a fitting way to finish his career.

Serving and retired crew members filled the station throughout the day to say their goodbyes and wish him well.

Nearly three decades of service

Lee’s career saw him serve at stations across Cornwall, including Camborne, Newquay, Penzance, St Austell, the Training Department, Tolvaddon and the Tactical Operational Reserve Group.

Tolvaddon Community Fire Station shared their farewell in a Facebook post at 11pm on Tuesday 4th June, praising his leadership and operational skills, and saying his impact had earned him the status of “Legend” within the service.

“We wish him and his family a long and healthy retirement,” they added. “We hope the next chapter is as good as this one has been.”
