Exciting New Leadership at The Lost Gardens of Heligan
David Harland Appointed as New CEO to Lead Heligan’s Future
The Lost Gardens of Heligan has announced the appointment of David Harland as its new Chief Executive Officer. This significant addition to the senior leadership team aims to propel the attraction’s mission of preserving its rich history while ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
A Natural Transition
David Harland has a long-standing relationship with Heligan, having served as an independent advisor to the Heligan & Smit Family Boards for many years. This new role as CEO is a natural progression for David, who will now oversee a group of companies that includes The Lost Gardens of Heligan, the Shipwreck & Treasure Museum at Charlestown, and Gillyflower Farm in Lostwithiel.
From 2013 to 2023, David held various executive positions at the Eden Project, including Group Chief Executive and the inaugural Chief Executive of Eden Project International. His tenure at Eden Project was marked by a significant reorganisation and expansion, both locally and internationally, including projects such as Eden North in Morecambe and Eden Dundee.
An Exciting New Chapter
David expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, stating, “I am thrilled to be working with the team. I have always loved Heligan and have followed its journey for a long time – one of my first jobs as a student was in fact at the gardens way back in 1995! This is an exciting time for us as we direct our focus to the core of what The Lost Gardens of Heligan and our associated businesses represent for our team, visitors and onlookers.”
High Hopes and Future Plans
The Directors at Heligan and Smit Associates are equally enthusiastic about David’s appointment. Sir Tim Smit commented, “We are delighted to welcome David Harland to join our team at Heligan and Smit Associates. Personally, I feel like a football manager who has persuaded a superb player to join our amazing team and help it evolve. All of us are thrilled and look forward to a long and successful future together.”
This new leadership comes on the heels of another strategic appointment earlier this year. Laura Chesterfield was named Managing Director and continues to lead and oversee overall operations at The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
