St Just Community Rallies to Save Historic Wesleyan Chapel
In a significant move to preserve local heritage, the St Just Miners’ Chapel Charity has launched a spirited fundraising campaign to save the iconic St Just Wesleyan Methodist Chapel and its adjoining community hall.
Facing imminent sale by the Trustees for Methodist Church Purposes, the Grade II* listed building, renowned for its architectural and historic significance, is at risk of closure and being lost to the community it has served for nearly two centuries.
Built in 1833 to support the families of local tin and copper miners, the Chapel has long been the heart of St Just, offering a space for spiritual reflection, celebration, and various cultural activities, including music, theatre, and education. Recognised as an ‘Asset with Community Value’ by Cornwall Council, the site is not only a key element of St Just’s cultural heritage but also serves as a vital gathering space for local community groups.
The Chapel’s plight is underscored by its listing on Heritage England’s ‘Heritage at Risk Register,’ highlighting urgent needs for preservation amidst dwindling congregational numbers and escalating maintenance costs. The impending sale threatens the future accessibility of the building for community and cultural uses, sparking the charity’s campaign to ensure its survival and continued contribution to local life.
Ian, Chair of the charity, emphasises the critical nature of the appeal, aiming to secure the Chapel’s future through necessary repairs and conservation work. The goal is to maintain the Chapel as a dynamic centre for arts, performance, and community engagement, connecting with the area’s rich heritage and culture.
The fundraising target is set at £250,000 by year-end, with the charity seeking support through donations and grant funding. Achieving this goal would allow the purchase of the Chapel, safeguarding its immediate future and paving the way for innovative community benefits. These include educational initiatives, environmental sustainability, and programming that reflects the local identity and cultural heritage.
Community members and supporters are urged to contribute in various ways, from donations and volunteering to sharing campaign information and ideas for the Chapel’s future. John, a member of the local congregation, and Chris, a resident who has frequently participated in Chapel events, share personal testimonials of the Chapel’s significance, highlighting its role as a cornerstone of local life and a national treasure.
With the backing of the community and heritage experts like Eric and Peter, who recognise the Chapel’s unparalleled value in Cornish history and culture, there is a hopeful vision for preserving this landmark. The St Just Miners’ Chapel Charity invites everyone to join the effort to keep this vital piece of St Just’s heritage alive for future generations.
