Transforming St Ives: First Look at Pedn Olva’s Stunning New Design
Multi-Million-Pound Revamp to Celebrate Coastal Heritage
The iconic Pedn Olva in St Ives is set to undergo a dramatic transformation thanks to a multi-million-pound investment by St Austell Brewery. Perched above Porthminster Beach, this landmark venue will close in January 2025, reopening in early summer with a brand-new look designed to embrace its breathtaking surroundings.
Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future
The redesign will pay tribute to the hotel’s rich heritage as the former engine house for Pedn Olva Point’s copper mine. Granite installations, copper accents, and locally sourced materials will echo the area’s industrial past while blending seamlessly with the coastal landscape. Visitors can look forward to a striking new lobby featuring a dramatic criss-cross staircase and expansive views of St Ives Bay.
Expanding Spaces with Stunning Views
The revamped Pedn Olva will boast reconfigured communal areas, doubling the dining capacity and creating open, inviting spaces that lead naturally to the sea. Floor-to-ceiling windows and bifold doors will maximise light and panoramic views, while new outdoor areas, including a terrace seating over 40 guests and a rooftop beach bar, will offer the perfect spot to soak up the coastal atmosphere.
Dining will also take centre stage, with menus celebrating local flavours. Fresh fish and seafood from St Ives’ own Matthew Stevens will be showcased alongside St Austell Brewery’s acclaimed beers.
Rooms Inspired by the Coast
All 26 bedrooms will be reimagined with larger windows framing ocean views and interiors inspired by the natural landscape. Features will include reclaimed driftwood headboards, whitewashed cladding, and warm rust and blue tones. Modern comforts such as Nespresso machines, rainfall showers, Hypnos mattresses, and minibars stocked with local beer will ensure a luxurious stay.
Sustainable Design at the Core
Kevin Georgel, Chief Executive of St Austell Brewery, said: “This multi-million-pound transformation is designed to redefine the guest experience at one of our most iconic sites and create a space for the Pedn Olva where innovative design harnesses its unparalleled location.
“Our vision for this project is clear: we want to create a space which better celebrates the Pedn Olva’s breathtaking surroundings. It’s an ambitious project that will unlock the venue’s true potential and open up more panoramic views of the sea. Reimagining and redesigning the interiors will create more inviting spaces that bring the outdoors in.”
Kevin added: “Our aspiration is to create a warm and welcoming pub atmosphere, year-round. A space where locals and visitors alike can relax, eat well or simply enjoy a drink taking in the surroundings. We look forward to giving our guests a very warm welcome once the Pedn Olva reopens in early summer 2025.”
Open Evening to Preview the Vision
Ahead of its January closure, an open evening will take place on 8th January 2025 from 5:30pm, giving the public a chance to view the designs and meet the team behind the transformation. Designers KDPA, who worked on previous St Austell Brewery refurbishments, will be on hand to discuss the project.
The Pedn Olva will close the following day, with the eagerly anticipated reopening set for early summer. For a preview of the new design, visit https://pednolva.co.uk/new-look/.
A History of Iconic Refurbishments
The Pedn Olva is the fifth pub in St Austell Brewery’s portfolio to undergo significant refurbishment in recent years, joining the ranks of the Pier House in Charlestown and the Rising Sun in St Mawes. With a legacy spanning 173 years, St Austell Brewery continues to invest in its venues across the South West, enhancing guest experiences while preserving Cornwall’s heritage.
