St Ives Transport Improvements Set to Begin After Summer

Two New Transport Schemes to Start After Summer

Work is due to begin this autumn on two new transport schemes in St Ives, with updates planned for both Tempest Roundabout near Lelant and Higher Stennack. The changes follow community consultation and form part of the St Ives Low Carbon Transport Strategy, a wider effort to reduce the impact of vehicles on the town.

The strategy is being delivered by Cornwall Council in partnership with the St Ives Town Deal Board.

New Signage and Landscaping at Tempest Roundabout

The first scheme will focus on Tempest Roundabout, where the existing signage is now out of date following improvements to the Park & Ride at St Erth.

Outdated signs will be removed and replaced with new ones directing traffic via the B3311 and to the St Erth Park and Ride, rather than Lelant Saltings Station. Road markings will also be renewed, with landscaping updates planned for the surrounding flowerbeds and grassy areas.

The changes are designed to support a wider traffic management strategy currently being developed for the town, easing congestion on local roads during peak periods.

Work on the roundabout is expected to begin at the end of summer.

Higher Stennack to Get Safer Crossing and New Seating Area

The second scheme will see improvements at Higher Stennack, including an informal crossing point between the mini-roundabouts, new seating, and a cycle parking area.

One set of speed cushions will be replaced with a flat top hump, aiming to make it easier for people to cross the road. Two streetlights will be relocated to make signs more visible and to free up space for pedestrians.

Other improvements include dropped kerbs, new paving at crossing points, and properly aligned tactile paving to support those with visual impairments and make crossing safer for wheelchair users and people with pushchairs.

Work will be carried out by Cormac and is scheduled to start in early October. Temporary daytime traffic lights will be in place to ensure the safety of the workforce.

Wider Plans Still Underway

Andrew Baraganwath, Chair of the St Ives Town Deal Board, welcomed the news, saying:

“I am delighted that work will begin on delivering these next two transport schemes after the summer embargo. The roundabout at Tempest is a key gateway into St Ives and improving the signage here will help to reduce the number of people driving through the centre of the town and encourage more drivers to use the park and ride.”

“The improvements at Higher Stennack will make it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross this busy road and are an important element in the overall Transport Strategy for St Ives.”

Work is also progressing on other schemes in the Low Carbon Transport Strategy. These include:

  • The completed Terrace scheme

  • Consols junction improvements

  • The first phase of the Malakoff open space scheme

  • Phase one of the Halsetown pedestrian safety scheme

Further phases for Malakoff and Halsetown will take place after the summer peak.

Plans are also being finalised for a scheme to improve traffic management at Tregenna Hill and Library Corner. This will be trialled under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) and is expected to be introduced in September.

A wider signage strategy is also being developed for St Ives, with consultation due later this year.
