Gas Pipe Upgrade Coming to St Ives: Community Invited to Hear Plans
Essential Upgrade Work Starting in January
Wales & West Utilities is set to begin an essential gas pipe upgrade in St Ives, with works scheduled to start on 2 January 2025. The project, focused on the Back Road East area, aims to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply for local homes and businesses for generations to come. The work is expected to be completed by late February, barring any unforeseen engineering difficulties.
Drop-In Session for Local Residents
To keep the community informed, Wales & West Utilities is inviting residents to a drop-in session on 26 November. The session will take place between 12pm and 4pm at the First-Floor Public Space in the Cornerstone Library Building, Gabriel Street, St Ives (TR26 2LX).
Attendees will have the opportunity to view the project plans and speak directly with members of the project team to address any concerns or questions.
Road Closures Planned
To carry out the work, traffic management will be necessary, including road closures in key areas:
- St Peter’s Street and Fish Street: 2nd January – 21st February
- Back Road East: 6th January – 21st February
- Back Road West: 27th January – 21st February
Wales & West Utilities is coordinating with Cornwall Council to minimise disruption.
A Green Future for Gas
Abby Smith, who is managing the upgrade work, highlighted the importance of the project:
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the wider area. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.
“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.”
