Carnage and Championship Contenders: United Downs Raceway Roars into Action This Sunday
The 2025 short oval motor racing season kicks off in Cornwall this Sunday, 9th March, at United Downs Raceway, St Day, promising a mix of chaotic crashes and strategic speed. The event, which begins at 12 noon, will feature Back to Basics Bangers, Stock Rods, and Saloon Stock Cars, ensuring a thrilling afternoon for spectators.
Saloon Stock Cars – Hard-Hitting Action Returns to Cornwall
Saloon Stock Cars are set to headline the opening meeting, with the class making a rare but extended return to Cornwall this season. Known for their brutal, contact-heavy racing, fans can expect no shortage of excitement on the track.
Among the local competitors, Bryn Finch of Menheniot will be looking to make a strong comeback after missing part of last season due to injury. Finch has been actively preparing in pre-season practice events and will be eager to put on a show at his home circuit.
Adding to the spectacle, Archie Brown of East Huntspill, reigning World, British, and English Champion, will lead the Grand Parade, where he will be presented with his Track Championship award for topping the United Downs Raceway standings in 2024.
Stock Rods – The Race for Gold Begins
The non-contact Stock Rods will make their first Westcountry appearance of the year, with all races contributing towards grid positions for the World Championship, which returns to St Day in late September for the first time since 2022.
The entry list is packed with top names, including:
- Callum Hosie of Newquay – the current European Champion
- Callum Faulconbridge of Plymouth – the reigning English Champion
- Tom Larcombe of Taunton – winner of the Grand National Championship at St Day last October
Local representation will be strong, with Jack Sear of Menherion, veteran racer Stephen Cock of Penryn, and teenager Christina Sillifant of Davidstow all set to compete.
Back to Basics Bangers – Wrecks, Spins and Mayhem
The Back to Basics Bangers will bring a classic, no-frills form of destruction racing, where minimal car preparation allows for a more accessible entry into the sport. Expect plenty of spinning, crashing, and last-ditch survival attempts as drivers battle their way to the finish.
Among those returning to the track are three young racers who made a name for themselves last season: Austin James of Hayle, and Camborne duo Jago Carveth and Harley Carr-Flamank. Additionally, the father-and-son team of Dan and Brandon Curtis of Troon will also be in the mix.
