St Austell Underpass Gets a Creative Makeover with Van Gogh-Inspired Art

Art and design students from the Creative and Digital Academy at Cornwall College have brought a splash of colour and creativity to the local community by transforming the Asda underpass into a vivid mural.

Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s famed “Starry Night” and the picturesque local scenery, the students of St Austell campus have dedicated their talents to revamping a space frequently marred by graffiti.

Year of Planning Culminates in Vibrant Display

The project, which was a year in the making, not only aimed to beautify the underpass but also to contribute positively to the community. The students, guided by their passion for art and support from their educators, embraced the challenge of turning a neglected space into a vibrant public art display.

Community and Support

The effort was supported by the Cornwall Councillor Community Chest Grant and Councillor Richard Williams-Pears, enabling the students to realise their creative vision. James Baggaley, the study programme manager for art and photography, shared the positive impact of the mural on local residents. Passers-by frequently stopped to watch the students at work, offering thanks and expressing admiration for the mural that now enhances their daily commute.

Pride in Student Achievement

David Atkinson-Beaumont, the head of campus, praised the project as a reflection of the college’s commitment to practical education and training. He highlighted the importance of such real-world projects in preparing students for future success in their artistic careers.

Meet the Artists

The mural was a collaborative effort by sixteen dedicated students, including Libby, April, Ayeisha, Gabrielle, Connie, Madison, and Vincent from the Level 2 Art and Design course. They were joined by Jessica, Ben, Ki, Melissa, Oggy, Star, and Ruby from the Level 3 course, and Iryna from the Access to HE Creative Arts programme.
