RNLI Lifeguards Save Struggling Surfer at Chapel Porth

Published On: 3 October 2024Last Updated: 3 October 2024By

On Saturday, 28th September, at 12:50 pm, a man was rescued by RNLI lifeguards at Chapel Porth after being caught in a dangerous rip current near the cliffs on the left-hand side of the beach.

Lifeguard’s Quick Response

RNLI lifeguard Max Lawrence noticed the surfer repeatedly trying to paddle out but struggling. When the man was pulled into the smaller coves under the cliffs by the rip current, Max entered the water to assist.

The situation worsened when the surfer lost his board and appeared visibly exhausted. Max managed to reach the man, guiding him onto a rescue board before paddling them both back to safety. Another lifeguard retrieved the surfer’s board.

Difficult Conditions

With strong onshore winds and waves between 1 and 1.5 metres high, it took some time for the pair to return to shore. Once back on the beach, the lifeguards conducted casualty care checks and determined that the man was safe to go home with his family.

Safety Reminder for Surfers and Swimmers

Drustan Ward, RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor, praised Max’s quick action during the rescue and emphasised the importance of understanding the dangers of the coastline.

As the autumn season begins, RNLI services will reduce, with lifeguards present mainly on weekends and during the October half-term. The RNLI advises beachgoers to visit lifeguarded beaches, and if in the water, to swim between the red and yellow flags. In emergencies where no lifeguards are present, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
