Lifeboat Hero Returns: Kit Watkins Takes the Helm Again at St Agnes RNLI
After a five-year break, volunteer lifeboat crew member Kit Watkins has returned to St Agnes RNLI, recently passing out for the second time as a D-Class helm. Kit, who originally joined the crew as a 17-year-old, is delighted to once again be at the helm, serving alongside his team.
A Familiar Face Returns to St Agnes
Kit joined the St Agnes RNLI crew nearly two decades ago, steadily working his way through the demanding training to become a regular D-Class helm. Over the years, he took command of the lifeboat during various rescue missions, dedicating 17 years of continuous service before stepping down in 2018 to focus on family and work commitments.
The pull of the RNLI community proved strong, and Kit rejoined the crew last year. After rigorous training, he has now reclaimed his helm qualification, a milestone confirmed by RNLI trainer-assessor Carl Beardmore. Reflecting on his return, Kit shared, “Now that my children are older, and I have more time to properly commit to training I am delighted to be part of the crew and at the helm again.”
Changes and Familiarity in Lifeboat Service
When asked about changes in his role since his previous service, Kit noted the RNLI’s ongoing evolution in safety practices and regulations, saying, “The RNLI is constantly updating regulations and training in line with the best and safest search and rescue practices. There were some details that were new to me and some that were still familiar, but you never forget the feeling of being part of the crew. It’s great to be back.”
