News has emerged this past week confirming the passing of John Gendall at his home in Penzance. Aged 82, John was a former Pirates player and a Life Member of Penzance & Newlyn RFC.

A Life Dedicated to Rugby

John’s connection to the sport began at Lescudjack School in Penzance and continued with the Pirates’ Mount’s Bay Colts team. From there, he progressed into the club’s senior ranks as a wing forward.

During the 1960s, John played a total of 107 games for Penzance & Newlyn RFC. Beyond the pitch, his “craft and graft” saw him contribute to the clubhouse and grounds—efforts that helped shape the club’s community spirit.

More Than a Player

Described as “often jovial and popular,” John was remembered as “dedicated and conscientious.” His involvement extended far beyond playing, serving as a Colts official, a member of the Supporters Club, a fundraiser, and a successful 3rd team manager.

Condolences and Next Steps

Sincere condolences are expressed to his wife Lorraine, sons Mark and Matthew, and all members of his family.

An update is expected to follow in the coming days.
