The rugby world mourns the loss of John Patrick ‘Tess’ O’Shea, a former Welsh international, Cornish Pirates and British Lions prop, who has died aged 83 in Australia.
A Storied Career
John’s rugby career spanned several prestigious clubs and international play, making significant contributions both on and off the field. After starting his career with Newbridge, he went on to make 213 appearances for Cardiff between 1963 and 1970. His time with Cardiff was marked by exceptional skill and leadership, qualities that he carried over to his brief but memorable tenure at the Cornish Pirates of Penzance & Newlyn RFC, where he captained the team during the 1970/71 season.
In addition to his club commitments, John also represented Wales internationally, earning five caps during the 1967/68 seasons. His international prowess was further showcased during his participation in Tom Kiernan’s 1968 British Lions tour to South Africa. John’s performance in this series was historic, particularly in a match against Rhodesia where he became the first Lions prop to score two tries in a game.
Controversy and Character
John’s career was not without its controversies. He holds the dubious honour of being the first Lion to be sent off in a match, during a particularly heated game against Eastern Transvaal, famously known as the ‘Battle of Springs’. Despite the altercation, he was reinstated following a post-match enquiry, reflecting the complex nature of his on-field persona.
Off the field, John was known for his humour and vivacity, often described as the life and soul of any gathering. His antics, particularly during the Lions’ tour, left a lasting impression on everyone he met, from teammates to hotel staff.
Legacy in Cornwall
Though his time with the Cornish Pirates was brief, John left a significant mark on the club and its members. He provided young players like John Kimberley with invaluable experiences by playing alongside them in significant matches. His legacy at the Cornish Pirates is also carried on through his family connections; his son, Richard ‘Rick’ O’Shea, not only played for the Pirates but also went on to become a rugby commentator and qualified doctor.
John often expressed a deep affection for the Cornish Pirates and the broader rugby community in Cornwall, famously noting that the various club colours he wore throughout his career blended into one great colour, the colour of rugby.
A Family’s Loss
John’s passing is deeply felt by his family, including his first wife Judy, who remains an active member of the Cornish Pirates’ community in Mousehole, and their son, Richard. The rugby community extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends, who remember him as a respected, popular, and charismatic figure.
John O’Shea leaves behind a legacy marked by sporting excellence, memorable antics, and a deep love for the game of rugby. His impact on the field, and the stories he created off it, will not soon be forgotten.
