In a significant career move, 23-year-old lock Steele Barker is set to join the Premiership rugby team Bristol Bears at the start of the next season, leaving behind his current team, the Cornish Pirates.

A Flourishing Career

Born in York, Steele’s rugby journey began at the Yorkshire Carnegie Academy. He later moved to Cornwall where he continued his education at the University of Exeter’s Penryn campus. During his time in Cornwall, Steele not only pursued his studies but also played men’s rugby for Penryn and Redruth. His robust performance at these clubs paved the way for his professional career with the Cornish Pirates, where he has made 35 appearances since the 2021-22 season.

Development and Praise

Steele’s development has been closely monitored and nurtured by the Cornish Pirates, particularly under the guidance of joint head coaches Alan Paver and Gavin Cattle. Alan describes Steele as a “great lad” who has matured immensely both on and off the field. Initially joining as a determined player from university, Steele’s stint at Redruth was pivotal. There, under the mentorship of individuals like Louie Tonkin, he honed his skills and developed into a formidable forward. His responsibilities grew to include calling the lineout, showcasing his strategic thinking and physical prowess.

An Opportune Transition

Despite the desire to keep Steele at the Cornish Pirates for another season, Alan believes that moving to Bristol Bears is a timely and beneficial step for his career. At Bristol, Steele will be under the care of Chris Morgan, promising a continuation of his development in a new environment.

Steele’s move from the Cornish Pirates to Bristol Bears marks a significant step in his professional rugby career, signaling great expectations for his future contributions to the sport.
