A newly-formed women’s football team based in Truro, Truro Bluebirds Football Club, recently hosted its first seven-a-side tournament, aimed at encouraging women aged 35 and over to get involved in the sport. The event saw seven teams from across Cornwall battling it out under clear autumn skies.
Seven Teams, One Goal
The tournament attracted teams from Redruth, Elevate, Troon, Goonhavern, and two squads from Mylor, alongside hosts Truro Bluebirds. Over 70 players took to the pitch, showcasing their passion for football and camaraderie in what turned out to be closely contested matches. The event highlighted the growing popularity of women’s football in the region.
Redruth dominated the tournament, remaining undefeated across all six games to claim victory. Beyond the competitive spirit, the tournament raised £400, which will be split between two causes: Heart Heroes, a charity supporting people with lifelong heart conditions, and Truro City Youth Football Club.
A Friendly Atmosphere
Lisa Marley, organiser of the event and a member of Truro Bluebirds, expressed her delight at the turnout.
“I had no idea what to expect when I first advertised the tournament. To have seven teams enter and take part was fantastic. The atmosphere was very friendly with players switching teams to cover for injuries and to ensure that everyone got as much football as possible,” said Lisa.
“Well done to Redruth Antiques on winning and thank you to everyone who took part and helped on the day. We’ve already had lots of requests for this event to be run again, let’s hope it’s the first of many.”

From Fun Match to Football Club
Truro Bluebirds FC began after a group of mums and carers from Truro City Youth Football Club organised a fun match to raise funds for charity. After the success of that event and another fundraising match, the group decided to form a proper team.
Lisa explained the journey: “Everyone who got involved in our first two fun games found they enjoyed switching from watching their children from the sidelines to being out on the pitch playing. Some have played before and are returning to the sport, but most have been giving it a go for the first time.”
With women’s football growing rapidly, Truro Bluebirds members are embracing the sport as an opportunity to improve fitness, learn new skills, and form friendships. The team now trains regularly on Thursdays from 6.30 – 7.30 pm at Truro High School.
Growing the Game
There are ongoing talks about setting up a new league for women over 35 in Cornwall, and Truro Bluebirds FC is keen to be part of it. For more information about the club or to get involved, email trurobluebirds@gmail.com.
This tournament may be just the beginning for women’s football in Truro, and with such a positive response, the Bluebirds look forward to hosting more events in the future.
