The Cornish Pirates have strengthened their squad for the upcoming season with the addition of two promising players on loan from Ealing Trailfinders.

Lock/backrower Matt Cannon and centre Harry Yates have joined the team, bringing fresh talent and competition to the squad.

Introducing Matt Cannon

Matt Cannon, 22, hails from Hertfordshire and has a strong rugby background. A former member of the Saracens Academy under 18s, Matt has honed his skills with Old Albanians, Hertfordshire, and Brunel University, where he also served as Chairman of the Rugby Society. Known for his diligence and hard work, Matt is expected to bring physicality and determination to the Cornish Pirates.

Joint head coach Gavin Cattle expressed his enthusiasm for Matt’s arrival, noting his potential to make a significant impact at the Championship level. “Matt is a big and physical forward who is keen and hardworking. He is looking to progress his game and make an impression at Championship level so we will be naturally keen to play our part,” said Gavin.

Spotlight on Harry Yates

Harry Yates, 23, was born in Kingston upon Thames but has spent most of his rugby career in the north of England. His previous clubs include Harrogate, Northumbria University, and Darlington Mowden Park. Harry has also showcased his talents with the Apache 7s and Speranza 7s teams.

Gavin Cattle highlighted Harry’s attributes, stating, “Harry joined the Trailfinders halfway through last season from Darlington Mowden Park. He too is big and physically strong, has a lot of growth in him, and is also keen to put his stamp on the game in the Championship. His presence will also create a lot of competition in his area within the squad, which is always a good thing.”

Strengthening the Squad

The loan signings of Matt Cannon and Harry Yates are seen as strategic moves to enhance the Cornish Pirates’ competitiveness in the Championship. Both players bring not only their physical prowess but also a strong desire to develop and excel at this level of rugby.

The Cornish Pirates’ ongoing collaboration with Ealing Trailfinders continues to yield positive results, and the addition of these two young talents is a testament to the fruitful relationship between the clubs.

Fans and teammates alike will be eager to see Matt and Harry in action, as they contribute their skills and energy to the Cornish Pirates’ campaign for the upcoming season.
