Cornwall Athletes Shine at GLL Awards Night

Published On: 2 July 2024Last Updated: 2 July 2024By

Athletes from all corners of Cornwall gathered at Callywith College in Bodmin for this year’s GLL Sport Foundation (GSF) awards.

The event honoured 116 talented athletes across 13 different sports, providing nearly £70,000 worth of financial, training, rehabilitation, and wellbeing support.

GLL, which manages nine leisure centres on behalf of Cornwall Council, hosted an evening attended by councillors, council officers, and representatives from Active Cornwall, Mencap, and Cornwall Swimming Association. The awards aimed to support those who often receive no additional funding, with 85% of the recipients falling into this category. Notably, 56% of the athletes are under 21, and 27% are under 16.

VIP Guests and Workshops

Special guests included Pegleg Bennett, the adaptive surf legend from Perranporth and Survivor 23 star, who engaged with the attendees, alongside Para dressage rider Fliss Marriott from Bodmin and aquabike champion Theresa Frost from Newquay. The evening also featured workshops on strength and conditioning, physiotherapy, and nutrition, adding further value to the event.

Karen Edmond, GLL Community Sport Manager, praised the evening, describing it as “a brilliant evening in a perfect venue,” and expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to its success, especially the staff and students from Callywith College.
