Cornish Pirates Secure Players’ Contracts as RFU Tensions Rise
The Cornish Pirates have taken a significant step forward, confirming the lifting of break clauses in their player contracts. This move, announced on 11th December, brings security to the players and reassurance to supporters during a challenging time for the club and the wider rugby community.
Contract Security for Players
Cornish Pirates CEO Sally Pettipher shared the news, emphasising the progress the club has made in commercial development. Sally said:
“Confirming that break clauses were recently lifted from the players’ contracts, I can add that the team at Pirates have made great strides in commercial development and, while we’re not over the line yet, with current and upcoming activities, I was confident enough to give the players that security.”
The decision highlights the club’s commitment to stability and forward planning amidst financial challenges facing the Championship league.
Letter to the RFU and MP Andrew George
Sally also addressed concerns regarding funding disparities and recent RFU pay awards. Speaking on behalf of the Cornish Pirates, she said:
“I also yesterday posted a letter to the President of the RFU, and personally delivered a copy to our MP Andrew George, asking for Cornish Pirates to be counted in the number of clubs calling for a motion of no confidence in the RFU Chief Executive and Chairman. This is in addition to being signatories to a collective Championship clubs’ motion for the same.”
The letter underscores ongoing frustrations with governance at the RFU, a sentiment echoed across Championship clubs.
As the situation develops, the Cornish Pirates remain focused on their long-term goals while navigating the challenges of the current rugby landscape.
